A survey of theory and practice in compositional design of asynchronous circuits

چکیده

There are several methods of describing systems in a modular fashion. These descriptions may represent a system in one of several ways, for example in a text form or as a graph. By using a modular representation, a large system can be split into multiple smaller sections, which can make operations such as verification of a system simpler and quicker. Multiple methods of designing asynchronous circuits also exist, and each one has benefits for designing a certain type of asynchronous circuits, and therefore has several pitfalls for designing another type of circuit. Concepts [32] are a method of describing signal interactions in an asynchronous system, which can then be composed with other concepts, which produce Signal Transition Graphs. Multiple graphs can then be combined and used to produce a full specification of an asynchronous system. This method uses a modular representation of systems to help in the design of an asynchronous system. This document discusses multiple methods of modular description and existing asynchronous design methods, including concepts, and compares these based on several metrics, in an attempt to see what the features of each method are, and how concepts fit in, and what further features could be added to concepts in the future. An Introduction to Asynchronous Circuit Design

The purpose of this monograph is to provide both an introduction to eld of asynchronous digital circuit design and an overview of the practical state of the art in 1997. In the early days of digital circuit design, little distinction was made between synchronous and asynchronous circuits. However, since the 1960's, the mainstream of the digital circuit design enterprise has been primarily conce...

A Minimal-Cost Inherent-Feedback Approach for Low-Power MRF-Based Logic Gates

The Markov random field (MRF) theory has been accepted as a highly effective framework for designing noise-tolerant nanometer digital VLSI circuits. In MRF-based design, proper feedback lines are used to control noise and keep the circuits in their valid states. However, this methodology has encountered two major problems that have limited the application of highly noise immune MRF-based circui...

Testing asynchronous circuits: A survey

Asynchronous circuit design has been studied for decades, but it has only recently been feasible to construct large and e cient asynchronous systems. This paper surveys di erent techniques for checking whether an asynchronous circuit has fabrication defects. The inherent di erences between asynchronous and synchronous circuits, primarily that asynchronous circuits do not have a global clock, ne...

Asynchronous Design Methodologies: An Overview

Asynchronous design has been an active area of research since at least the mid 1950's, but has yet to achieve widespread use. We examine the benefits and problems inherent in asynchronous computations, and in some of the more notable design methodologies. These include Huffman asynchronous circuits, burst-mode circuits, micropipelines, template-based and trace theory-based delay-insensitive cir...
